What’s Retirement Center?

Hey everyone! My name is Sean. I’m developing a game for PC/Mac called Retirement Center. It’s about an old man who moves into a retirement home. It’s a pixel-art-action-adventure-romance-drama-comedy. Or something.

My original vision for the game was going to be a 2D platformer where Henry (the old man) moves really slowly. Sort of an anti-Mario. I still think that mechanic could be interesting and I’ve thought about giving him power-ups such as walking shoes, a cane, a wheelchair, etc. But ultimately I wanted to make a game where you explore a world. A bit more like Zelda.

oldlady_right_animatedOver the years, I’ve created several variations of the artwork. And I’ve even coded a few different examples of the game. The first version was a simple room where you could move around. I made it using C++ and OpenGL. It even had an NPC of an old woman.

I forgot about the project and focused on other things. Then I discovered SFML and wanted to give it a try, so I opened up Code::Blocks and used some of the old assets to create another version of the game. It was mostly just a test. But a few people saw it and liked the concept. I forgot about it for a few more years.

kingspong_animatedRecently, I started messing around with Unity and I made a pixel art game called King’s Pong. This, once again, sparked my interest in making a game. I actually mostly completed King’s Pong (still have a few finishing touches to add), but it has a fully working single player mode with AI, a working menu, scoring system, HUD. I’m fairly proud of it despite how simple it is.

Anyway, I’ll continue to update this blog as I make progress on Retirement Center. Feel free to follow me on social media (links are at the bottom of this website).
